Handsworth Community Gardens Trust
The community gardens are situated within the council run statutory allotment site on Finchwell Road Handsworth Sheffield.
They were created by local residents around 10 years ago, this enables residents from the Handsworth area to be able to come along and either garden at their leisure without having to have an allotment, help out with keeping the communal areas tidy or just taking in the sites and relaxing. Either way the results are very rewarding.
There are a number of raised beds and polytunnels for local residents to come along and use. As well as local residents getting involved, various local schools and groups have had the pleasure from getting involved.
The activities range from working raised beds, maintaining the butterfly garden, general maintenance weeding etc. and bulb planting.
There is a gardening class that meets every Friday run by the WEA this is held in our meeting room which has toilet and washing facilities and is fully equipped for the disabled.
There is one allotment plot which is worked and managed by a local Mental Health Clinic and they bring along a group of people to garden.
The Community Gardens is a great way for local people to meet, socialise and grow fruit and vegetables.
The aims of the Trust are:
"To advance the education, health and welfare of the public of Sheffield... without distinction of age, disability, race, religious or political affiliation, sex or sexual orientation, through the provision and development of schemes for the conservation and protection of the environment in particular schemes that create small holdings and allotments and encourage the proper cultivation of them by individuals, families and groups for the benefit of the community"
